“No other rescue organization operates with this level of expertise and compassion." Dr. Enrique Sienra
Meet the founder of Responsible Rescue of Uruguay, Etanne Michele.
"I've always loved animals but growing up, my Mom and I divided our time between Georgia and New York City. So, owning a dog was not possible. But knowing that we would be in Georgia for the whole summer, my Mom contacted Otis Moore, the director of the Cherokee County Humane Society and told him that we would like to foster a dog or puppy. " That was the beginning...
Tootsie was our first foster puppy.
Poor Mama - she cried for a week when Tootsie got adopted. |
That fall, we moved to Georgia full time. Jupiter and Mars, 8 weeks old, arrived at death's door, then went to the hospital for three days. We decided to adopt whichever puppy did not get adopted and Jupiter (on the left) is with us in Uruguay now.

Evita and her littermates were our first Parvo puppies.
What a difference it makes to be rescuing puppies in the U.S. After a scary night and a few days at the vet, all the puppies recovered. |
Gabrielle was left at a shelter in North Georgia, literally as she was going into labor. This was really exciting because my best friend got to come with us when we brought everyone home!

When we moved to Uruguay, we learned the awful truth: People here throw newborn puppies in the trash instead of spaying and neutering and rescue organizations are so overwhelmed that they give away puppies before they are spayed or neutered and the cycle repeats. There is no Humane Society that does virtually everything-vaccinate, spay or neuter before adoptions and finds homes. We were completely on our own and worse, no one here had ever heard of early (pre-adoption) castration, nor would they do it.
